Description
Narrator describes the launch of Sputnik 1 and we hear the familiar bleep as the pictures show the launch and follow the booster up high into the sky. Vox pops on the streets of New York or Washington. The reporter refers to the Russians getting two satellites going around the world implying that these interviews were done after Sputnik 2's launch, One Man says he doesn't admire the Russians and feels that America should have done it first. Another woman says she isn't worried and still thinks that the US is ahead. Final man says that he is alarmed and if he was a military service and fell down on the job he could stand a court martial. Eisenhower's reaction. Eisenhower says he feels that America doesn't need to be concerned about this as he says the value of the satellite going around the Earth is still problematical (meaning that it isn't useful to the Russians practically).

Sputnik 1 was launched on October 4, 1957 onboard an R-7 Booster rocket, the world's first intercontinental Ballistic Missile. The satellite was 58 cm in diameter and weighed approximately 83.6 kg (about 184 lb). Each of its elliptical orbits around the Earth took about 96 minutes.
