Description
View looking up out of the top window of the Apollo 202 Command Module as the drogue parachutes deploy at over 320 miles per hour. Just over a minute into the clip the drogues pull the main three orange and white parachutes out from the top of the capsule. This release moment would have been accompanied by a very loud bang as the pyrotechnic devices in the top of the spacecraft detonated to hurl out the packed parachutes. It takes almost thirty seconds for these main canopies to completely unfurl, helping to slow the capsule down to under 20 miles an hour for splashdown.

Historic Context of Clip
Background to Apollo 202:
AS-202 (also known as the Apollo 3 mission) was the second test flight of the Saturn 1B rocket. Part of the mission was to test the Command and Service Modules (CSM-011) including a test of the Command Module's heat shield during re-entry. The Command Module was unmanned but carried the guidance and navigation system and the fuel cell electrical system for test flight purposes. It splashed down 370 km from the target landing site, near Wake Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It took the USS Hornet 8 hours and 30 minutes to reach the capsule. The capsule is currently on display on the Hornet ship in Alameda California.
