Description
Views of the lunar surface from orbit on board Apollo 8. Craters pass by below as the spacecraft passes into bright sunlight with almost no shadows. Mountain chains and smoother flatter areas pass beneath as the spacecraft adjusts its attitude to more of an oblique view. Towards the end of the clip the view shows the lunar horizon and the curving limb set against the black backdrop of space beyond.

Background to Apollo 8:
Apollo 8 was the second successful manned mission of the Apollo space program, in which Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders became the first humans to orbit the Moon. It was also the first manned launch of the Saturn V rocket.
