Description
Rusty Schweickart stands on the porch, outside of the Lunar Module window, testing the new Apollo space suit for the first time in space. Kept alive entirely by the suit and his Primary (or portable) Life Support backpack (PLSS) Schweickart is only tethered to the LM with a thin nylon chord. Functioning effectively as a third, separate spacecraft NASA gave him the call sign "Red Rover" in recognition of his red hair. Another crew man is filming him through the LM window, which shows the Landing Point Designator (LPD) marks on it. Another, wider view of Schweickart can be seen from near the Command Module hatch looking back up and into the sunlight in clip FTV-0002086.

Background to Apollo 9:
Apollo 9 was the third manned mission in the Apollo program, a ten day Earth-orbital mission launched 3 March 1969. It was the second manned flight of the Saturn V launch vehicle and the first manned flight of the Apollo Lunar Module (LM). Rusty Schweickart and Dave Scott performed an EVA to check out the new Apollo spacesuit, the first to have its own life support system rather than being dependent on an umbilical connection to the spacecraft.
