Description
View of Rusty Schweickart on the Lunar Module porch testing out the Apollo space suit for the first time. Dave Scott can be seen in the foreground standing up in the open hatch of the Command Module. This is the reverse view of those seen in clip numbers FTV-0002080, FTV-0002081, FTV-0002082 and FTV-0002083. The spectacular views seen in these clips can be seen here in the reflection in Dave's gold visor. The shot is under exposed as sunlight bursts periodically into the lens. Kept alive entirely by the suit and his Primary (or portable) Life Support backpack (PLSS) Schweickart is only tethered to the LM with a thin nylon chord. Functioning effectively as a third, separate spacecraft NASA gave him the call sign "Red Rover" in recognition of his red hair.

Background to Apollo 9:
Apollo 9 was the third manned mission in the Apollo program, a ten day Earth-orbital mission launched 3 March 1969. It was the second manned flight of the Saturn V launch vehicle and the first manned flight of the Apollo Lunar Module (LM). Rusty Schweickart and Dave Scott performed an EVA to check out the new Apollo spacesuit, the first to have its own life support system rather than being dependent on an umbilical connection to the spacecraft.
