Loading the video player...

Description
A half Earth (slightly over exposed) is glimpsed in the blackness of space as the camera is quickly repositioned to record the view as it rises high above the lunar horizon far beneath. Grey craters and darker lunar mare are clearly visible in stark contrast to the blues and whites of the Earth beyond.

Historic Context of Clip
Background to Apollo 11:
The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of the Apollo programs, and the third human voyage to the moon. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin.

Lunar Orbit:
On July 19, Apollo 11 passed behind the Moon and fired its Service propulsion engine in order to enter lunar orbit. In the several orbits that followed, the crew saw passing views of their landing site in the southern Sea of Tranquillity.
